Standard Tuning

For acoustic and electric guitar, the standard tuning is E, A, D, G, B, E, from lowest to highest string. For the bass guitar, the standard tuning is E, A, D, G. Alternate tunings are used to obtain different sounds, mostly belonging to different genres. Common examples are drop D tuning (where the lower E string is lowered), open tuning (often used for slide guitar) or shifted (where all strings are lowered or raised equally).
